Baby Crib Safety

Baby crib safety is comprised of both buying reliable products and using them wisely. Some different rules will apply depending upon the age of the infant. Here are some tips related to creating the safest crib experience for your child:

Practices to promote baby crib safety:

•If a child is under a year old, avoiding pillows, quilts, comforters or pillow-resembling toys or pads can greatly reduce the risk of suffocation.

•Utilize a sleeper as opposed to a blanket to reduce suffocation risk also.

•When using a blanket, tuck it around the crib mattress. Place the feet of the baby to the foot of the crib and only allows the blanket to cover as high as the child's chest.

Purchasing products for baby crib safety:

•Select a firm and tight-fitting mattress. If you can fit two finger widths between the mattress and the crib's side, then the mattress is too small.

•Avoid purchasing a crib on rollers, particularly if you have other small children around or strong pets. Some cribs have lockable wheels to prevent the crib from rolling. This is better than free-rolling types. However, no wheels is far more ideal.

•The width between slats should be no wider than 2 3/8" so that the baby's body cannot fit through in any way. Also, double check that none of the slats are missing or cracked and that each is firmly in place.
